Bringing biophilic design into the office for greater well-being

As our lives are increasingly confined to interior spaces, connecting with nature is becoming essential to our mental and physical well-being. An emerging approach to interior design, called biophilic design, emphasizes this connection by integrating natural elements into built spaces (natural light, landscape views, organic materials, indoor green spaces...).
In this article, we explore the reasons and methods for integrating biophilic design into offices, offering a healthier, more productive and enjoyable working environment.

The positive impact of biophilic design on employees and the company

Integrating biophilic design into the office can bring a multitude of benefits to employees. Studies show thatexposure to nature reduces stress, improves concentration and productivity by 8%, and promotes creativity. By creating a more welcoming work environment and reducing stress factors, companies can also increase employee well-being by 13% and reduce absenteeism.

In addition to the benefits for employees, biophilic design can also have a positive impact on corporate performance. Biophilically designed offices can encourage collaboration, promote talent retention and enhance brand image as a caring employer.

Our tips for integrating biophilic design into your workspaces

  • Maximize the use of natural light by opening up spaces and minimizing the use of partitions. Work on the variation of this lighting throughout the day, with different sources and qualities of light, shadows and reflections. Brightness that respects the body's circadian rhythm contributes to a healthy hormonal balance.
  • Introduce indoor plants to purify the air and create a natural, soothing atmosphere(e.g. Labo Fargeot's premises). Biodiversity is more important than the number of plants used.
  • Create outdoor meeting areas or office gardens/balconies to provide employees with natural relaxation areas. Or, if possible, position windows on attractive landscapes and choose large picture windows. In fact, heart rate recovery from stress factors is 1.6 times faster with access to a natural view.
  • Incorporate nature-inspired design elements into the decor (colors, shapes, patterns), such as a honeycomb wall or floral wallpaper. Use organic materials (wood, stone, bamboo, natural textiles).
  • Improve acoustics by reducing undesirable artificial noise (printer, car...) through, for example, the use of acoustic panels. It's important to stress that complete silence is not what we're after: hearing natural sounds, such as birdsong or a stream, has a very positive effect on employee motivation and energy. Soundtracks can be used for this purpose, although a natural origin is recommended.

By integrating biophilic design into office spaces, companies can create working environments that promote employee well-being, productivity and satisfaction. As we spend more and more time indoors, reconnecting built spaces with nature is becoming crucial to our health and happiness.
